    Begin your research. You might start with a general Google search and then a Google Scholar search, but you will also need to visit the <\/span>AU Library <\/span><\/a> <\/span>databases to find sound academic articles.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n

    Find <\/span>two to six reputable secondary sources<\/span> <\/span>and review them carefully. <\/span>At least one<\/span> <\/span>of these sources should be a peer-reviewed journal article accessed through the AU Library databases (unless your tutor has agreed to waive this requirement).<\/p>\n<\/li>\n

    Based on the information you found in your research, as well as your own brainstorming, develop a straightforward thesis that is sufficiently limited in scope (meaning that you can do justice to it in a short essay).<\/p>\n<\/li>\n

  4. \n

    Create a <\/span>very brief<\/span> <\/span>outline of the main points you plan to cover in your essay.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n

  5. \n

    Write the first draft of your essay. Your essay must be approximately 1,000 to 1,200 words in length (about four double-spaced typed pages).<\/p>\n

    As you write, <\/span>integrate information from your research<\/span>. Of the two to six sources you located and reviewed in Step 3, choose <\/span>at least<\/span> <\/span>two (and no more than four) secondary sources<\/span> <\/span>to use within your essay, and then add quotations and paraphrases from them. Every time you paraphrase or quote, follow these four steps to cite and integrate the source properly:<\/p>\n

    1. Introduce the source.<\/li>\n
    2. Present the research.<\/li>\n
    3. Credit the source parenthetically.<\/li>\n
    4. Discuss.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

      In other words, include \u201cquotation sandwiches\u201d and \u201cparaphrase sandwiches\u201d in your essay. Don\u2019t just drop in quotations or paraphrases from sources into your essay. (Some experts call these \u201chit-and-run quotations,\u201d \u201cdropped quotations,\u201d or \u201cfloating quotations.\u201d)<\/p>\n

      Create a bibliography that lists every source you cited in your essay. (In MLA style, this page is titled \u201cWorks Cited,\u201d while in APA style it is titled \u201cReferences.\u201d) Take this task seriously. We expect you to pay very close attention to detail and follow samples for each entry. We recommend the <\/span>Purdue Online Writing Lab<\/em> <\/span>(OWL<\/em>) <\/span><\/a> <\/span>for all citation matters. Remember that your tutor is there for you, so <\/span>if you have consulted the citation guidelines<\/em><\/span> <\/span>and still have questions, please ask for help.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n
