If <b style=\"cursor: auto; color: inherit;\">SOUTH<br \/>\nDAKOTA<\/b> does not have a case that was decided by the United States Supreme<br \/>\nCourt, choose a civil rights case from another state for which the United<br \/>\nStates Supreme Court issued a decision.<\/p>\n<p style=\"line-height: normal; cursor: auto; color: inherit;\">Here is a brief description of<br \/>\ncivil rights and civil liberties: Civil rights refers to equal social<br \/>\nopportunities under the law. It gives you these freedoms such as the right to<br \/>\nvote, the right to public education, or a fair trial, among other things,<br \/>\nregardless of your wealth or race. Civil liberties mean freedom of religion,<br \/>\nequal treatment and due process under the law, and the right to privacy.<\/p>\n<p style=\"line-height: normal; cursor: auto; color: inherit;\">You should be able to go online<br \/>\nand look up <b style=\"cursor: auto; color: inherit;\">SOUTH DAKOTA\u2019S<\/b> and famous cases decided by the Supreme<br \/>\nCourt. For example,&nbsp;<i style=\"cursor: auto; color: inherit;\">Brown v Board of Education<\/i>&nbsp;(1951) started<br \/>\nin Topeka, Kansas, and ended up in the Supreme Court of the United States.<br \/>\nAnother example would be&nbsp;<i style=\"cursor: auto; color: inherit;\">Calvary Chapel Dayton Valley v Steve Sisolak,<br \/>\nGovernor of Nevada<\/i>&nbsp;(2020) that started in Nevada and ended up the<br \/>\nUnited States Supreme Court. A good source of information about cases decided<br \/>\nby the United States Supreme Court is www.scotusblog.com. Other sources can be<br \/>\nresearched online using search terms for \u201ccivil rights cases decided by the<br \/>\nU.S. Supreme Court.\u201d <b style=\"cursor: auto; color: inherit;\">Be sure to use a case&nbsp;<u style=\"cursor: auto; color: inherit;\">actually decided by the<br \/>\nUnited States Supreme Court<\/u>, and NOT a case decided by your state\u2019s supreme<br \/>\ncourt or a different court<\/b>. A case that is still pending before the United<br \/>\nStates Supreme Court should&nbsp;<b style=\"cursor: auto; color: inherit;\">NOT&nbsp;<\/b>be used. <\/p>\n<p style=\"line-height: normal; cursor: auto; color: inherit;\"><\/p>\n<p style=\"line-height: normal; cursor: auto; color: inherit;\">Research your court case and<br \/>\nwrite an outline of the case that you will be using to prepare a presentation,<br \/>\nwhich will be a narrated PowerPoint.<\/p>\n<p style=\"line-height: normal; cursor: auto; color: inherit;\"><\/p>\n<p style=\"line-height: normal; cursor: auto; color: inherit;\">This week&#8217;s assignment should<br \/>\ninclude (a) summary of the case; (b) a case outline; and a summary.<\/p>\n<p style=\"line-height: normal; cursor: auto; color: inherit;\"><b style=\"cursor: auto; color: inherit;\">Summary of the Case<\/b><\/p>\n<p style=\"line-height: normal; cursor: auto; color: inherit;\">In one or two paragraphs, provide<br \/>\na general overview of the case that serves as a snapshot of what the case is<br \/>\nabout and how it ended up in your state high court. A summary is using your<br \/>\nwords to write a brief history of the case. Do not give your opinion or your<br \/>\ninterpretation but stick to the facts only.<\/p>\n<p style=\"line-height: normal; cursor: auto; color: inherit;\"><\/p>\n<p style=\"line-height: normal; cursor: auto; color: inherit;\"><b style=\"cursor: auto; color: inherit;\">Case Outline<\/b><\/p>\n<p style=\"line-height: normal; cursor: auto; color: inherit;\">Your court case outline should<br \/>\ninclude:<\/p>\n<p style=\"line-height: normal; cursor: auto; color: inherit;\"><b style=\"cursor: auto; color: inherit;\">Title<\/b>: Name of the case<\/p>\n<p style=\"line-height: normal; cursor: auto; color: inherit;\"><b style=\"cursor: auto; color: inherit;\">Facts of the case<\/b>: Provide<br \/>\nkey facts involving the case.<\/p>\n<p style=\"line-height: normal; cursor: auto; color: inherit;\"><b style=\"cursor: auto; color: inherit;\">History of the case<\/b>: What<br \/>\nlegal action was taken based on what your state laws say about this case?<\/p>\n<p style=\"line-height: normal; cursor: auto; color: inherit;\"><b style=\"cursor: auto; color: inherit;\">Legal questions<\/b>: What were<br \/>\nthe legal issues the court had to decide?<\/p>\n<p style=\"line-height: normal; cursor: auto; color: inherit;\"><b style=\"cursor: auto; color: inherit;\">Decision or holdings<\/b>: Did<br \/>\nthe court decide for the plaintiff or the defendant? Explain the reason behind<br \/>\nthe decision?<\/p>\n<p style=\"line-height: normal; cursor: auto; color: inherit;\"><b style=\"cursor: auto; color: inherit;\">Verdict and opinion<br \/>\n(judgement)<\/b>: What were the concurring and dissenting opinions? How many<br \/>\njudges decided for the defendant and how many justices decided against the<br \/>\ndefendant? What was the final verdict from the judge or the jury, if it was a<br \/>\njury trial?<\/p>\n<p style=\"line-height: normal; cursor: auto; color: inherit;\"><b style=\"cursor: auto; color: inherit;\">Conclusion<\/b>:<\/p>\n<p style=\"line-height: normal; cursor: auto; color: inherit;\">What was the resulting impact of<br \/>\nthe ruling? How did the citizens of your state benefit from it? Was this a good<br \/>\ndecision?<\/p>\n<p style=\"line-height: normal; cursor: auto; color: inherit;\"><\/p>\n<p style=\"line-height: normal; cursor: auto; color: inherit;\">Requirements<\/p>\n<ul style=\"margin-top: 0in; cursor: auto; color: inherit;\">\n<li style=\"line-height: normal; cursor: auto; color: inherit;\">The length of your outline will vary. Usually, an<br \/>\n     outline is anywhere from 1-3 pages long. Make sure to write full sentences<br \/>\n     to explain your case. It is a concise list to be used as a reference for<br \/>\n     you during the presentation.<br style=\"cursor: auto; color: inherit;\"><br \/>\n     Using the outline, you will be describing the court case in your<br \/>\n     presentation and the scenario around the court case. The use of Wikipedia<br \/>\n     as a primary source of information is to be avoided &#8211; it is not a reliable<br \/>\n     source of information.<br style=\"cursor: auto; color: inherit;\"><br \/>\n     <b style=\"cursor: auto; color: inherit;\">Search for an example of a case outline in the Internet<\/b>.
