Students will select
\na counseling related topic of interest and complete a 5\u20136-page literature
\nreview, written in<\/span> <\/span>APA style. The literature review should culminate in a research
\nquestion(s)\/gap in the literature. Although<\/span> <\/span>quality of the content will be weighed most heavily, papers are expected
\nto have correct grammar, punctuation,<\/span> <\/span>spelling, and APA formatting. You should find at least 10 recent articles
\non your topic, with at least 3 empirical<\/span> <\/span>studies.<\/span> <\/span>The goal of this assignment is to critically review the literature on
\nyour topic and to practice using the literature<\/span> <\/span>review to inform your study. Use sources to help you determine a gap in
\nthe literature and the need for your<\/span> <\/span>study.<\/span> <\/span>Students will first
\nbe matched with a peer and will review each other\u2019s literature reviews,
\nproviding feedback on<\/span> <\/span>content, APA, flow, adherence to the rubric, etc. This will be completed
\nprior to the deadline. Consult the textbook in helping you come up with a
\nresearch topic and write the literature review. The \u201cLit<\/span> <\/span>Review\u201d is referred to in your
\ntextbook as the \u201cIntroduction\u201d of a Research Report. Also consult professional<\/span> <\/span>journal articles to see how the
\nauthors write their literature reviews and create a rationale for their study.<\/span>

Major Components of the Literature Review<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/span><\/p>\n

1.    <\/span><\/span><\/span>Introduction of
\ntopic & rationale<\/span><\/p>\n

\n<\/span><\/span><\/span>What specific counseling-related topic are you reviewing? Be sure it\u2019s
\nnot too broad or vague.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n<\/span><\/span><\/span>Get specific!<\/span><\/p>\n

\n<\/span><\/span><\/span>Why is this topic important (not to you, but to counselors who are your
\nspecific target)?<\/span><\/p>\n

\n<\/span><\/span><\/span>Is your argument clear enough to warrant this lit review?<\/span><\/p>\n

\n<\/span><\/span><\/span>Is the reader clear on what this review will cover and why (have you
\nprovided a statement<\/span> <\/span>introducing what will be covered in the review)?<\/span><\/p>\n

\n<\/span><\/span><\/span>Is your argument backed up by citations? Are all your claims backed up by
\ncitations?<\/span><\/p>\n

\nimportant literature<\/span> <\/span>clearly omitted? Is it clear that you reviewed significantly more

\ncorrectly and meaningfully<\/span> <\/span>(brief review of methods, findings, relevance)?<\/span><\/p>\n

\ntransitions to connect your<\/span> <\/span>topics)?<\/span><\/p>\n

\nThat is, why was it<\/span> <\/span>important to include that info in your review? When reviewing a study or
\nciting specific<\/span> <\/span>research, be sure to add \u201cso what\u201d sentences at the end of that. What did
\nthis mean in terms of our purpose? What gap did it
\nilluminate? How does it relate to your rationale or research<\/span><\/span>

\nyou reviewed what we know and linked<\/span> <\/span>that to gaps in what we know?<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\nand rationale?<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\n<\/span><\/span><\/span>Have you fleshed out these gaps and used citations to back

\nreview as you review various studies.<\/span> <\/span>Toward the end of the lit review, you want to reiterate a
\nsummary of broad gaps that lead into<\/span> <\/span>your research questions.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n
