General Guidelines<\/b><\/p>\n

Our task in this class is two-fold: to read, and to write. Our reading is outlined on the course syllabus; our writing is outlined below. <\/span>Each of the essays for this course should be approximately 1000 words in length. In your writing, please be specific, and quote closely when and where appropriate. But these should be fairly free-form papers: please write what you actually do see, and what you actually do feel.<\/span><\/p>\n

If you are wondering about citation format, I recommend <\/span>MLA<\/a> style to organize your work and document your sources, but if there is another recognized format that you prefer, that’s fine too.<\/span> The important thing, from my perspective, is that if and when you consult a source, you make that consultation abundantly clear in your writing through proper quotation and citation.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Plagiarism<\/b>: The Department notes: \u201cAcademic regulation 19B gives a definition of plagiarism as \u2018the presentation of words, ideas or techniques of another as one’s own.\u2019 You should learn to recognise situations where plagiarism is likely to occur, and acquire the techniques of proper citation as soon as possible. Most English handbooks and the Department’s A Brief Guide to the Preparation of Essays and Reports by Dr. Perkin explain the standard methods of documentation and citation.\u201d Plagiarized work receives no credit. Plagiarism can constitute grounds for academic penalties up to and including expulsion. Please do not take this unnecessary risk.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Essays and exams will be assigned a grade using the following scale and criteria (see regulation 5A of the academic calendar):<\/span>
