Assignment Prompt<\/h4>\n

For this assignment, you will be writing an argumentative essay\u2013a piece of writing that requires you to take a position, what rhetoricians call a <\/span>claim<\/a>, on a debatable topic (that is, a topic with more than one side). Specifically, you will present a <\/span>policy claim<\/a> <\/span>where you argue for or against a change of some kind. This <\/span>claim<\/a> <\/span>should be supported by reliable, credible <\/span>evidence<\/a> <\/span>(i.e. <\/span>scholarly sources<\/a>) backed by research.  In addition to presenting your <\/span>claim<\/a>, you will also need to acknowledge the other side, which is called the <\/span>counterargument<\/a>. <\/span>For this assignment, you may choose your own topic. Hint: browse topics that interest you in “Opposing Viewpoints” our article database accessed through the banner.<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

Assignment-Specific Requirements:<\/h4>\n

Length:<\/b> <\/span>This assignment should be at least 750 words. <\/span><\/p>\n

Thesis<\/a>: <\/span><\/b>Underline your <\/span>thesis statement<\/a> <\/span>or the main <\/span>claim<\/a> <\/span>of your letter.<\/span><\/p>\n

Supporting Points<\/a>: <\/span><\/b>Plan to develop at least three strong <\/span>supporting points<\/a> <\/span>to accompany your <\/span>thesis<\/a>and at least one <\/span>counter<\/a>. Each supporting point should equate to at least one <\/span>body paragraph<\/a>. <\/span><\/p>\n

Sources Needed: <\/span><\/b>The essay should integrate at least 4 reliable and <\/span>credible sources<\/a>, to help prove the argument for or against a policy change.  Be sure to use <\/span>MLA guidelines<\/a> <\/span>for all in-text and <\/span>Works Cited<\/a> <\/span>citations. <\/span><\/p>\n

While we encourage you to acquire sources from Gale\u2019s Opposing Viewpoints, you may access credible, scholarly sources<\/a> from other resources.  Tertiary sources, such as online encyclopedias, dictionaries and Wikipedia, are not scholarly sources<\/a>, and should not be cited within your work; however, they may offer helpful foundational information as you develop your understanding of an issue.
