Your paper should be 5-6 pages (double-spaced, approximately 250-300 words per page). Do not
\ntry to describe the full paintings (especially the long handscrolls). Rather, choose carefully the
\nscenes in your first painting (a or b), describe what you see and think about what the painter is
\ntrying to express (think: Xiang Shengmo\u2019s poems) through the landscape and the journey he is
\npresenting. Think about the importance of naming in the Chinese garden, and how names and
\npoetry enhance a particular spatial frame. Extend this idea to what you see in the painting. For
\nyour second painting (c or d), you should do the same, but you should also be thinking about
\nhow Gong\u2019s painting creates a different mood from the handscroll by your first artist. This has
\nalso largely to do with the fact that Gong Xian was painting at a different time: not at the end of
\nthe Ming, but at the beginning of the Qing, when the country was ruled by the foreign Manchus
\nand China was experiencing war-related upheavals and trauma.<\/span><\/p>\n
