During the semester, you are to read the novel<\/span> <\/span>Ishmael,<\/span> <\/span>by Daniel Quinn. It is a short book and<\/span>
is easy to read. At the same time, it is intended to prompt thought and deep reflection. It requires<\/span>
a good deal of time post<\/span>–<\/span>reading to let the ideas germinate<\/span> <\/span>\u2013<\/span> <\/span>and you\u2019ll probably want to re<\/span>–<\/span>read <\/span>sections as you write your essay. And, the earlier you read it, the more it will enlighten other<\/span>
parts of this course. Do not procrastinate!<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/font>

<\/span><\/span><\/font><\/div>\n
The<\/span> <\/span>Ishmael<\/span> <\/span>essay has two goals: The first is to ensure that you\u2019ve<\/span> <\/span>read and fully understand the <\/span>themes, ideas, and lessons of the book. The second, and more important, is to encourage you to think<\/span>deeply and critically about its themes, ideas and lessons.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/font>

<\/span><\/span><\/font><\/div>\n

<\/span><\/span><\/font><\/div>\n
Assignment<\/span>: Write a 5<\/span>–<\/span>7 page (double spaced) reflective essay tha<\/span>t explores your reactions,<\/span>
emotions and thoughts about<\/span> <\/span>Ishmael<\/span>. The assignment is somewhat vague, in order to give you<\/span>
room to explore thoughts and deeply reflect.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/font>
Some guidelines to help as you prepare your essay.<\/span><\/span>

<\/span><\/font><\/div>\n
– I do not want a summary of the book. If<\/span> <\/span>you need to summarize some main ideas in the book <\/span>to make your argument, fine, but the summary should make a very small portion of our<\/span>
essay.<\/span><\/span>

<\/span><\/span><\/font><\/div>\n
– Your essay should contain<\/span> <\/span>a thesis in the beginning<\/span> <\/span>and the rest of the essay should be written in <\/span>support of your<\/span> <\/span>thesis. This doesn\u2019t mean it has to be a persuasive essay, but it does mean it needs <\/span>to have a clear focus and organization. The thesis can be whatever you want it to be<\/span> <\/span>\u2013<\/span> <\/span>as broad or <\/span>narrow as you wish<\/span> <\/span>\u2013<\/span> <\/span>but it must exist and your job is to develop and s<\/span>upport it.<\/span><\/span><\/font><\/p>\n

\u2022<\/span> <\/span>Your essay should clearly demonstrate that you have read and reflected on the entire book<\/span>
(reading and responding to just one chapter won\u2019t cut it). It should not be a collection of<\/span>
your musings about life. The essay should be grounded in the<\/span> <\/span>br<\/span>oad<\/span> <\/span>themes of the book<\/span>,<\/span>
or particular ideas that you find poignant, and your developed reactions to them.<\/span><\/span>
\u2022<\/span> <\/span>Your essay can either be personal (e.g. \u201cthis book made me feel…\u201d) or more academic<\/span><\/span>
(e.g., \u201c<\/span>Ishmael<\/span> <\/span>explored themes of<\/span> <\/span>__________<\/span> , and when evaluated<\/span> <\/span>through the lens of<\/span><\/span>
_________<\/span> <\/span>, there are interesting connections to______.\u201d) However, if you write in an academic<\/span>
style, I still want to know<\/span> <\/span>how the book affected you<\/span>.<\/span> <\/span>It should not be wholly abstract. So, it is<\/span>
likely impossible to write an \u201cA\u201d paper without some statements in the first<\/span>–<\/span>person.<\/span><\/span>

– As part of your paper, I want you to apply your chosen themes and\/or reflections to a minimum<\/span>
of two ethical challenges we are<\/span> <\/span>facing in our current work<\/span><\/span><\/font><\/div>\n
. How do they help you understand<\/span>
and address these challenges? Use your analysis of the book to develop an ethical stance for these<\/span>
challenges.<\/span><\/span>

<\/span><\/span><\/font><\/div>\n
-I am not going to grade you on your opinion; that\u2019s impossible. You will be graded<\/span> <\/span>on a) your<\/span>
understanding of the text (broad themes, ideas, main messages) as you demonstrate it with your<\/span>
writing, b) the appropriateness, depth, and quality of your thesis, c) how well you support your<\/span>
thesis (organization, diction, grammar, eloquence, c<\/span>onciseness), and d) the depth of your<\/span>
analysis. You should be at a level of<\/span> <\/span>synthesis<\/span> <\/span>\u2013<\/span> <\/span>taking the ideas of the book, combining them<\/span>
with your own ideas and knowledge to create novel ideas<\/span> <\/span>\u2013<\/span> <\/span>and deep reflection, not mere<\/span>
description.<\/span><\/span><\/font>
\u2022<\/span> <\/span>While reading the book<\/span>, keep notes of the things you find interesting, poignant, mind<\/span>–<\/span>
blowing, unconvincing, wrong, etc. Reading this book will prompt thoughts. If you are<\/span>
