interpret, and evaluate the political thought of either two or all three of them.Were their arguments<\/span><\/p>\n

coherent? Were they persuasive? Have they proved lastingly beneficial (or detrimental)?<\/span><\/p>\n

Essay Topic: 2-2 (1200 words)<\/span><\/p>\n

Our readings on nineteenth century thought have included much that is lively\u2014<\/span><\/p>\n

by the great essayists Emerson and Thoreau, the great poet Whitman, Abolitionists and Recon-<\/span><\/p>\n

structionists, prophets of national expansion, and critics of American inequality. Please write a<\/span><\/p>\n

lively survey of all the different writers we\u2019ve encountered in the second part of the course\u2014<\/span><\/p>\n

With the exception of the two or three writers that you\u2019ve dealt with in Essay 2-1. (\u201cAll\u201d has a well-established<\/span><\/p>\n

meaning: you shouldn\u2019t leave anybody out. You aren\u2019t expected, however, to give every writer<\/span><\/p>\n

equal space. To the extent possible, you should group the different writers in a reasonable way that<\/span><\/p>\n

makes your essay clear and coherent.) With respect to each writer, you should be mindful of the questions<\/span><\/p>\n

 raised in Essay Topic 2-1. Were their arguments coherent? Were they persuasive? Have they proved lastingly <\/span><\/p>\n

Beneficial (or detrimental)? Please don\u2019t be hesitant to make lively judgments about the merits or lack of<\/span><\/p>\n

merits of the authors. But please, of course, be civilized and sensible.<\/span><\/p>\n
