Drama <\/span><\/span><\/span>Extension <\/span><\/span><\/span>\u201c<\/span><\/span>Essay<\/span><\/span>\u201d<\/span><\/span> <\/span>\u2013 What Happens Now?<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

For <\/span><\/span><\/span>this <\/span><\/span><\/span>Final Exam<\/span><\/span>, y<\/span><\/span>ou are being asked to take the liberty of adding to<\/span><\/span>, or extending<\/span><\/span> <\/span><\/span><\/span>an <\/span><\/span><\/span>original work, by writing an \u201cepilogue\u201d of sorts.  <\/span><\/span>Choose only one of the two play<\/span><\/span>s<\/span><\/span> <\/span>we read<\/span><\/span>, <\/span><\/span><\/span>Trifles <\/span><\/span><\/span>or <\/span><\/span><\/span>A Doll\u2019s House.<\/span><\/span> <\/span> <\/span><\/span>Regardless of the play chosen, your epilogue should answer the question, <\/span><\/span><\/span>\u201cWhat happens<\/span><\/span>, now that<\/span><\/span>she returns?\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n


<\/span><\/span>For <\/span><\/span><\/span>Trifles<\/span><\/span>, you should be writing what happens when Minnie gets released from prison and returns to her home.<\/span><\/span> <\/span> This return would occur not long after the final curtain falls.<\/span><\/span> <\/span> Do not let years pass.<\/span><\/span> <\/span> It\u2019s up to you what Minnie does with her newfound freedom.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/span><\/p>\n

For <\/span><\/span><\/span>A Doll\u2019s House<\/span><\/span>, you should be writing what happens when Nora returns to her home.  <\/span><\/span>This return could be the next day, the <\/span><\/span><\/span>next week<\/span><\/span>, or <\/span><\/span><\/span>after<\/span><\/span> <\/span><\/span><\/span>some <\/span><\/span><\/span>months.  Do not let years pass.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/span><\/p>\n

Y<\/span><\/span>our \u201cwhat happens now\u201d response <\/span><\/span><\/span>must <\/span><\/span><\/span>include <\/span><\/span><\/span>both <\/span><\/span><\/span>prose <\/span><\/span><\/span>and<\/span><\/span>character <\/span><\/span><\/span>dialogue.  <\/span><\/span>Follow the format you see in plays themselves.  <\/span><\/span>Pay <\/span><\/span><\/span>close <\/span><\/span><\/span>attention as to how dialogue is written. <\/span><\/span><\/span>Write your work as a playwright would write.<\/span><\/span> <\/span> Look closely at fonts, punctuation, and letter cases used.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/span><\/p>\n

You must write in such a way so that your ideas are related to the rest of the play.  Your job is to <\/span><\/span><\/span>continue<\/span><\/span> <\/span>the play realistically<\/span><\/span>, not to rewrite the play.  <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/span><\/p>\n

Your language should match the play\u2019s language, and your character should still be representative of the character in the play.  The same holds for the other characters involved in your new final scene(s).  <\/span><\/span>Bear in mind the time period of the work.  <\/span><\/span>Credibility matters!  <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/span><\/p>\n

Regarding characters \u2013 you are not required to use every character we met in the play.  As well, you are allowed to introduce new characters, if that makes sense for your new work.  Be sure your character list is accurate.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/span><\/p>\n

As we learned beginning with short story<\/span><\/span>, an audience needs to understand a character\u2019s actions, inactions, and reactions, so they must follow a natural progression for a character.<\/span><\/span> <\/span> Your character has been created, and your job now is to stay true to that character<\/span><\/span>, and others<\/span><\/span>.  Of course, that does not mean that something unexpected cannot happen<\/span><\/span>, as long as it does not suspend belief. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/span><\/p>\n

In addition:  <\/span><\/span>Your <\/span><\/span><\/span>extension essay<\/span><\/span> <\/span>should begin like every written play does, with a listing of the characters and information on the Scene and\/or Setting.  <\/span><\/span>Stage directions <\/span><\/span><\/span>should<\/span><\/span> <\/span>also be included.  <\/span><\/span>You should <\/span><\/span><\/span>present<\/span><\/span> <\/span>this <\/span><\/span><\/span>material <\/span><\/span><\/span>before the text of your essay begins.  This section does not count as part of the required length.<\/span><\/span> <\/span> Again, pay <\/span><\/span><\/span>close <\/span><\/span><\/span>attention to how this is written in dramas<\/span><\/span>, including the formatting required<\/span><\/span>.<\/span><\/span> <\/span> Follow the formatting<\/span><\/span> <\/span>you see in the written works.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Regardless of your choice of play,<\/span><\/span> <\/span>try to have a little fun with the creative freedom this opportunity presents.  Having read so much literature this semester, you should have a good sense of what makes a story<\/span><\/span> <\/span>and<\/span><\/span> <\/span>a plot<\/span><\/span> <\/span>good literature<\/span><\/span>, and character<\/span><\/span>s<\/span><\/span>compelling.  <\/span><\/span>Stay true to the original works<\/span><\/span>, while taking the liberty of expanding the works with your own approach to literature.<\/span><\/span> <\/span> And just so we are <\/span><\/span><\/span>clear, sorry, but no zombies<\/span><\/span> <\/span><\/span><\/span>or aliens <\/span><\/span><\/span>in these plays!<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Format:<\/span><\/span> <\/span> Be sure to follow MLA style for font<\/span><\/span> <\/span>(Times New Roman)<\/span><\/span>, spacing<\/span><\/span> <\/span>(double)<\/span><\/span>, and pagination<\/span><\/span> <\/span>(your last name and page number on each page)<\/span><\/span>. <\/span><\/span><\/span>Play titles are written in italics.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Look closely at the written works in your textbook, and follow all formatting as you see it.  There are lots of capital letters and words in italics.<\/span><\/span> <\/span> Be careful with your formatting.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Length: <\/span><\/span><\/span>Your epilogue should be <\/span><\/span><\/span>at least t<\/span><\/span>hree <\/span><\/span><\/span>full pages<\/span><\/span>.  <\/span><\/span>Try not to go<\/span><\/span> <\/span><\/span><\/span>longer than <\/span><\/span><\/span>seven<\/span><\/span> <\/span>full<\/span><\/span> <\/span>pages of text in length.  <\/span><\/span>Remember the <\/span><\/span><\/span>front matter material needed before your epilogue begins.  <\/span><\/span>Th<\/span><\/span>at fron<\/span><\/span>t<\/span><\/span> <\/span>matter<\/span><\/span> <\/span>is not included in the required page count.  <\/span><\/span>The front matter material is <\/span><\/span><\/span>explain<\/span><\/span>ed in the \u201cIn addition\u201d section of this assignment.<\/span><\/span> <\/span> You do not need to include citations, since it is assumed you are writing original literature.<\/span><\/span> <\/span> It is also assumed you will do your best writing for this essay.  Quality matters!<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n
