In Australia, it is
\npresently outside the scope of practice for diagnostic radiographers to report
\nformally on medical imaging examinations (Wood, 2022). Whilst the adoption of
\nadvanced practice roles, which incorporate reporting radiographers, has been well
\nestablished internationally, acceptance and implementation of clinical
\nreporting by trained radiographers in Australia have been slow (Wood, 2022).
\nThis presents a valuable case for investigation. <\/span><\/p>\n


<\/span><\/p>\n

Diagnostic radiographers are
\nan indispensable part of the diagnostic pathway and have proven to be
\nwell-equipped to learn new skills and competencies (McConnell & Baird,
\n2017).  <\/span>Studies propose that upskilling
\nand role development benefit the individual and create a more collaborative
\nworkforce (Field & Snaith, 2013). Research also suggests radiographer
\nreporting can improve patient service delivery and be advantageous to
\nexpediting the diagnosis and review of clinically significant findings to the
\nRadiologist (Page, Bernoth, & Davidson, 2014).  <\/span>If the transfer of responsibilities is viable
\nand patient care is improved, its implementation should be seriously
\nconsidered. <\/span><\/p>\n

Several challenges
\nexist in implementing such responsibility in Australia. The establishment of
\nstandardised and quality-controlled reporting guidelines, along with support
\nfrom regulatory frameworks and professional bodies, poses a barrier to its
\nenactment. Moreso, there remains resistance from radiologists and medical
\nprofessionals, driven by concerns regarding professional boundaries, tradition,
\nand collaboration, which can impede the acceptance of radiographer reporting.
\nResearch also suggests that comprehensive education and training programs should
\nconcentrate on developing specific skills that align with the responsibilities
\nof radiographers, namely image interpretation proficiency, refining clinical
\ndecision-making, and fostering effective communication skills, rather than upskilling into more advanced practice roles. <\/span><\/p>\n

This narrative review will look
\ninto the current literature surrounding the adoption of clinical reporting by
\nradiographers in Australia, with a primary focus on the barriers that impede
\nits implementation and why a formalised approach to radiographer reporting can
\nbe justified. <\/span><\/p>\n

Methodology<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n

A
\ncomprehensive search <\/span>for
\nrelevant articles<\/span> was conducted using electronic <\/span>databases
\nsuch as Google Scholar, International Journal of Diagnostic Imaging and Radiation Therapy, ScienceDirect, PubMed Central, <\/span>and Ovid
\nMEDLINE. <\/span>The main search
\nterms used to find the articles were (\u201cRadiographer\u201d) AND (\u201cScope\u201d) OR
\n(\u201cRadiographer\u201d) AND (\u201cAdvance\u201d) OR (\u201cRadiographer\u201d) AND (\u201cAustralia and
\nlimited\u201d) OR (\u201cRadiograph*\u201d) AND (\u201cskill and report*\u201d). From this search, any
\npeer-reviewed publications matching the search items were selected. Articles
\nwere deemed eligible for inclusion if there were <\/span>English language, full-text
\npublications and articles<\/span>
\npublished no earlier than 2013. <\/span><\/p>\n
