\n<\/span>Examples include literacy rates, life expectancy, and percentage of
\ngirls enrolled in schools. <\/span>Indicators
\nalso exist for economic performance, including per capita income, percentage of
\nthe population with access to the internet, and growth of gross domestic
\nproduction (GDP). <\/span>There are also
\nindicators of political performance: elections, alterations in power of
\npolitical parties, presence or absence of protests and riots, and levels of
\ncorruption. <\/span>You can find quantitative
\ndata for many kinds of indicators by using the data banks of such institutions
\nas the World Bank and the Economic Commission for Latin American and the
\nCaribbean (ECLAC, but better known by its Spanish-language acronym,
\nCEPAL). <\/span>You can access these data banks
\nthough the internet: worldbank.org (look for \u201cbrowse by country or indicator\u201d)
\nand www.cepal.org<\/span><\/a>
\n(look for \u201cdata and statistics\u201d).
\n<\/span>Transparency International is an international organization that ranks
\nthe countries of the world by their level of corruption. <\/span>Other international organizations are also
\nvaluable sources of information.<\/span><\/p>\n
\nshould be constructed with well-developed paragraphs; they are the \u201cbuilding
\nblocks\u201d of an essay. <\/span>Each of your
\nparagraphs should have one central idea, expressed in the first sentence (in
\nwhat is called a topic sentence). <\/span>There
\nshould be four to six sentences in each paragraph. <\/span>Paragraphs have been called \u201ccompositions in
\nminature\u201d: each paragraph thus has an argument (expressed at the beginning),
\nevidence (in the body), and a concluding sentence (the last sentence) that ties
\neverything together and reminds us of the purpose of the paragraph.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n<\/span>Avoid contractions and colloquial words and expressions. <\/span>Number pages (though not the title
\npage). <\/span>Do not use \u201cI,\u201d \u201cyou,\u201d or

\n<\/span>Pace yourself. <\/span>Start early on the
\nproject and give yourself the necessary time to write a cogent and polished
\nessay. <\/span>You should have multiple drafts,
\neach of which you proofread, making necessary revisions. <\/span>(In graduate school at Cornell I was told,
\n\u201cThere are no one draft wonders.\u201d)<\/p>\n
