PURPOSE<\/span><\/span>: To serve as a metric of
\nhistoriographical skills retained in the course so far, students are expected
\nto write an essay response to the following prompts.<\/p>\n

\nDevelop an argument that evaluates the extent to which the formation of
\nWestern Civilization was helped or hindered by the regional rivalry with Islam<\/b><\/p>\n

ESSAY REQUIREMENTS:<\/h3>\n

Your response must:<\/p>\n

–       
\n<\/span><\/span><\/span>Be no less than 750 words and no more than 1250
\nwords.<\/p>\n

\n<\/span><\/span><\/span>Remember, minimal work tends to get minimal
\ngrades.<\/p>\n

o  
\n<\/span><\/span><\/span>I want to be EXTREMELY clear on some things.<\/p>\n

\u00a7 <\/span><\/span><\/span>no less than 1000 words <\/p>\n

 You should be aiming for an 80%\/20%
\nbalance of your words versus material taken from other places. Quoting other
\nsources is usually a bad practice. Paraphrasing other sources, so your work can
\nlive in the context of other material is the best way.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n<\/span><\/span><\/span>Specifically address the core issue(s) of your
\nchosen prompt<\/p>\n

–       
\n<\/span><\/span><\/span>Must contain a thesis\/claim and then must
\nutilize (not just insert) various pieces of evidence to support your claim.
\nMore evidence is better.<\/p>\n

–       
\n<\/span><\/span><\/span>Your essay should focus on 2-3 concerns you wish
\nto investigate and discuss. You should define these concerns in the
\nintroduction of your paper.<\/p>\n

–       
\n<\/span><\/span><\/span>Must not be simply a series of information
\nstatements taken from the reading. It is required that you emphasize a line of
\nreasoning in your discussion.<\/p>\n

SUGGESTED FORMAT<\/h2>\n

A logical format is to establish an introductory paragraph
\nthat introduces your argument\/claim\/thesis. Within that introduction, you
\nshould introduce, very, very briefly, your chosen pieces of evidence and then
\nsubsequent body paragraphs that elaborate on your evidence. Usually, one paragraph
\nper piece of evidence you mean to introduce is sensible.
