Y<\/span><\/span>ou should set the scene for your dissertation. You need to introduce the topic, provide the occupational therapy context and introduce the key supporting literature. You should clearly state what your area of investigation is about, which may be expressed as a question<\/span><\/span> <\/span>or aim<\/span><\/span>, and why you think it is important to answer it. This section should provide a broad review of the current evidence around your area of interest and must draw on areas such as policy and guidelines, service delivery, management practices and relevant theoretical <\/span><\/span><\/span>perspectives. <\/span><\/span><\/span>This should t<\/span><\/span>herefore provide a context and rationale for the focus of your <\/span><\/span><\/span>topic.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

This broad background information should then be focussed onto a main <\/span><\/span><\/span>aim<\/span><\/span> <\/span>or specific question, demonstrating a logical thought process. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

You must present <\/span><\/span><\/span>detail of your literature search strategy <\/span><\/span><\/span>in your dissertation, including inc<\/span><\/span>lusion and exclusion criteria, data bases access<\/span><\/span>ed<\/span><\/span> <\/span>and keywords used. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

You should use a consistent and structured approach in appraising the evidence <\/span><\/span><\/span>(using a recognised critical appraisal tool\/s) <\/span><\/span><\/span>and present a detailed discussion of both the methodology and findings. You are advised to present an evidence table<\/span><\/span>.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

You will need to be familiar with the methodologies being applied, the methods of data collection and analysis used in the papers in order to critique them. This should not be a descriptive account of the papers you have read but should demonstrate a good understanding of the strengths and weaknesses of the research. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

You should demonstrate a synthesis of the literature by identifying themes across the <\/span><\/span><\/span>main <\/span><\/span><\/span>findings of the 6 to 8 articles.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

This section should end in some conclusions about the body of evidence you have appraised.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Y<\/span><\/span>ou should apply the findings of your appraisal to your original question. You should discuss how well the current evidence addresses your chosen client group\/setting etc.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

You should state how your dissertation findings <\/span><\/span><\/span>provide an evidence base for o<\/span><\/span>ccupational therapy in practice and, if appropriate, make suggestions of how your outcomes have added to occupational therapy knowledge and make recommendations for future research. You should acknowledge any limitations in being able do so. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Finally, you should discuss how the process of carrying out the review will influence your own <\/span><\/span><\/span>professional <\/span><\/span><\/span>practice<\/span><\/span>, referring to the HCPC and the RCOT<\/span><\/span>.<\/span><\/span>\u200b<\/span><\/p>\n
