For this question, the target population is mental health patients, while the accessible population will be mental health patients who will be willing to participate in the study. As Fetzer (2020) describes, the target population comprises all persons who meet the sampling criteria, and in this study, mental health patients receiving long-acting injectables, while the accessible population will be the portion of these patients who will be willing to participate in the study.

There is a difference between accessible and target populations. Accessible population, based on Thacker’s (2020) description, refers to the subset of the target population who researchers can reach and recruit for their purpose. In the context of the PICO question, the accessible population will be mental health patients the researcher can reach and are willing to participate in the study. The target population refers to all eligible individuals for the study, and in the context of the PICO question, the target population is all mental health patients.

References

Fetzer S. (P) will the use of opioids create a negative effect in their long-lasting lives? (I) Minimize the use of opioids in the name of pain control to avoid any all long lasting effects for their beneficence. (C) By comparing results with different patients and use a value scale of pain and categorize the need for opioids only if deem necessary. (O) Perhaps by not relying on opioids and using other methods of pain management, patients with drug history abuse would not get triggered and consider returning to lifetime of addiction. According to Donroe, J. H., Holt, S. R., & Tetrault, J. M. (2016, December 6) about 11% of patients exhibit ”red flags” when discussing their pain management treatment by showing eagerness towards the names of opioids or even knowing the side effects by memory without having any history of medical education. In most cases this patients have a history of drug abuse by being current addicts or patients who have been addicts in the past. By reviewing this PICO question, the main purpose remain wether a hospital serves as band-aid to longer medical condition such as addiction.

Explain the difference between an accessible and a target population.

Fetzer, S.
