\nmasculinity and emphasized femininity is by shedding greater limelight on male
\nathletes than their female counterparts in sports. <\/span><\/span>Lewis (2014) revealed that the total broadcast time for
\nwomen\u2019s sport was only one thousand hours every year, as well as the percentage
\nof media exposure being considerably low, as only \u201c5% of media coverage in the
\nUK is devoted to women\u2019s sport\u201d (Lewis, 2014). Based on self-report results,
\n66.7% of participants chose that they always noticed male athletes on
\nnewspapers, or sport covers. <\/span>Hegemonic
\nmasculinity<\/span> is a practice that exalts men’s dominance in society and
\napproves the subordination of the common male population; it is always
\nconstructed in relation to various subordinated masculinities as well as in
\nrelation to women. Femininity<\/span> on
\nthe other hand refers to the nature of being womanly and having qualities that
\nthe society perceives as being of a woman. Notably, there have been an
\nincreased number of female athletes in sports over the years. However, research
\nanalysing gender in sport show that men receive a considerable amount of limelight
\ncompared to their female counterparts in any level of sports. Photography, news
\narticles, and other media coverage in sports are more rampant in presenting
\nnews about male athletes than female athletes. For instance, in a study on the
\nnews coverage of male and female athletes at the Indonesia Masters 2020 event,
\nfrom 62 news samples, only 24 articles covered female athletes, while 38
\ncovered male athletes (Atlantis Press, 2020). This happened despite only a
\nsmall difference in the number of male and female athletes who won gold medals.
\nIn this study, 38 articles covering male athletes gave similar information on
\nthe three male athletes who had won gold medals thus ensuring unnecessary
\nrepetition and male exaltation. S<\/span>ports media is a very male-dominated
\nsetting around the globe giving more visibility to sports traditionally
\npractised by men (e.g., football) and reporting massively about male athletes
\nand their performance. The International Sports Press Survey 2011 concluded
\nthat more than 90% of the articles were written by male journalists and more
\nthan 85% of the articles focused on sportsmen, with only 8% of the analysed
\nsport articles being written by named female journalists.<\/p>\n
