[1] Introduction — 1 or 2 pages long — Grabs attention of readers, explains research question\/problem, briefly explains primary sources that will be used to answer that question\/problem, and provides thesis statement (your overall argument — essentially your answer to the research question). <\/span><\/div>\n

[2] Historiography section — 1 or 2 pages long — How have other historians approached your topic? What have they said, and why have they not adequately answered your research question? You need to summarize but also critically examine previous scholarship in this section, as well as put your thesis in conversation with that scholarship. <\/span><\/div>\n

[3] A more thorough account of your primary sources — 2 or 3 pages long — What are these sources exactly? Who produced them? When were they produced?  Provide some historical background context about the sources. This section is descriptive. It basically just communicates information about the sources.  <\/div>\n

[4] Your analysis — 3 or 4 pages long — this is the most important section because it is where you make a compelling case for your overall argument, and you support that case with detailed, close reading of your primary sources. While section 3 is descriptive, section 4 is full of analysis. Here, you take your reader beyond the surface meaning of your sources, and you convince your reader of your overall thesis. <\/span><\/div>\n

[5] conclusion — 1 or 2 pages long — remind your reader of your initial research question\/problem, explain that you have now addressed that question, and perhaps (in your last paragraph or two) look beyond your specific research question and consider the larger significance of your findings. <\/span><\/div>\n
