To prepare for this essay, you should read pages 24-27 of chapter 1 and Beeman\u2019s co-authored <\/span>Harvard Business Review (other document attached) <\/span><\/span>article that addresses liberal white supremacy in response to racial violence and social protests over the summer of 2020. Center your discussion on one of the prompts below: <\/span><\/b><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/span><\/p>\n

1. Beeman lists several practices and behaviors that uphold liberal white <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

supremacy: Vilifying working-class people as the worst racists, white fragile <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

behaviors of crying and defensiveness, vilifying radicals as too divisive and <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

disruptive, and evading racism by pointing to other issues as more important <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

(<\/span>See Figure 3 below<\/span>). Have you seen these behaviors play out in your <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

organizations or community discussions? Does this liberal white defensiveness <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

ever reach a point of unreasonable, hostile, or aggressive racism-denial? Is your <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

leadership prepared for this kind of hostility and resistance? Does your <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Organizations have policies or practices to help protect members involved in anti- <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

racist work from targeted attacks and more subtle forms of liberal white <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

supremacy? <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

2. Beeman argues that \u201cPositions in diversity management…help contain radicalism <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

as diversity becomes something to manage. Workshops and conversations on <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u201crace\u201d are not really about combating racist practices that impact people of color, <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

but controlling radical discourse, and challenges to the institution\u201d (p. 26). Design <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

a workshop or training that is more radical than liberal; one that confronts racism <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

and elitism and holds members accountable. What would the training or <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

workshop involve? How would it differ from other experiences you have had with <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

these kinds of workshops? Would you operate within the language of DEI or use <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

a different title for your workshop? <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n
