\nyou choose, I expect the project to show evidence of mastery of material; you

\nany technical term that you use in your own words <\/span><\/p>\n

\n<\/span><\/span><\/span>thoroughly
\nexplain in your own words all ideas and texts that you consider<\/span><\/p>\n

\nmultiple detailed reasons justifying any conclusions that you come to, whether
\nthey are the conclusions you are summarizing from a source or your own
\nconclusions. <\/span><\/p>\n

I also expect the paper or
\npresentation to be concise\u2014that is, there should be no \u201cfiller\u201d sentences or
\nunnecessary repetition, and it should be clear how every sentence contributes
\nto your overall thesis. <\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/span><\/p>\n

You will need at least TWO
\n(2) non-in-class sources for this paper. These cannot be sources that we read
\nfor class; they can support your position, oppose your position, or provide background
\ninformation. At least one of these sources needs to provide relevant background
\ninformation.  <\/span>In addition, you need to
\ndraw on and cite. at least ONE (1) text that we read for class, in some way.

\n<\/span><\/p>\n

Sources can come from only
\nthe following sources: an article found through databases on the UST library
\nwebsite (e.g. CLICSearch, Philosopher\u2019s Index, JSTOR, Project Muse, etc.), a scholarly
\nbook, or an article on the Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy
\n(plato.stanford.edu) or the Internet Encyclopedia of Philosophy
\n(www.iep.utm.edu). I especially recommend using the Stanford Encyclopedia. NO
\nOTHER SOURCE IS ACCEPTABLE. Feel free to check with me to see if a given source
\nis acceptable.<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n

The following tasks need to
\nbe done in the project, whether you write a paper or give a presentation. They
\ndo not necessarily need to be done in this order:<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/span><\/p>\n

1.     
\n<\/span><\/span><\/span>An
\nintroduction and first section or slide, which should state your question or
\ntopic, thesis, and explain what you will do in each section of the paper. <\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/span><\/p>\n

2.     
\n<\/span><\/span><\/span>Explain
\nthe importance of the question i.e. what implications or consequences does this
\nquestion have practically e.g. how it\u2019s important morally, politically,
\nsocially, personally. <\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/span><\/p>\n

3.     
\n<\/span><\/span><\/span>Present
\nrelevant background information. By \u2018relevant background information\u2019, I mean
\nany scientific, legal, or religious information that needs to be understood to
\nunderstand your topic.<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/span><\/p>\n

4.     
\n<\/span><\/span><\/span>Explain
\nwhat two sources <\/i>(not sources that we
\nread for class) say on this question. You do not need to discuss everything
\nfrom these sources, but only that information from them that is relevant to
\nyour argument. Make sure to explain relevant background information from at
\nleast one those sources. The source that presents background should be
\ndiscussed in the first section of the paper. <\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/span><\/p>\n

5.     
\n<\/span><\/span><\/span>You must
\nreconstruct from one of these sources a
\nformal, numbered, valid argument<\/i>, in one of the valid argument forms we
\nlearned in class.  <\/span>You should explain
\nwhat the source means by each premise and why the source thinks each premise is
\ntrue. <\/span><\/p>\n

6.     
\n<\/span><\/span><\/span>Make
\nreference to at least one source<\/i> that we read for class.<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/span><\/p>\n

7.     
\n<\/span><\/span><\/span>Explain
\nyour own chosen view on the topic, making sure to motivate that view. You must
\nconstruct your own formal, numbered, valid argument<\/i>, in one of the valid
\nargument forms we learned in class; the conclusion of this argument must be
\nyour thesis. Explain what the premises mean and explain why we should think
\nthat they are true. <\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/span><\/p>\n

8.     
\n<\/span><\/span><\/span>Raise at
\nleast one objection<\/i> to your argument
\ni.e. give reasons why someone might deny one of the premises of your own
\nargument. <\/span><\/p>\n

\n<\/span><\/span><\/span>Explain why the objection is wrong<\/i>. <\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/span><\/p>\n

10.  <\/span><\/span><\/span>End with a conclusion summing up how you showed
\nyour thesis.<\/span><\/p>\n
