You are an economic advisor to U.S. President Joe Biden. <\/span> President Biden would like to reformulate his proposals for Social Security, specifically to Old Age and Survivors Insurance (OASI), i.e. excluding Disability Insurance. <\/span> What Social Security reforms do you propose, and why? <\/span> Your memo should include an analysis of the economic considerations relevant to the policy recommendations you present to President Biden, drawing on our discussions in class about the theory, empirics, as well as current policy surrounding Social Security. <\/span> Please be sure to use the course material to address the effect of your proposals, relative to those of President
\n<\/span>Biden, on intergenerational and intragenerational equity; <\/span> labor supply; <\/span> private savings; <\/span> interest rates; <\/span> and economic growth. <\/span> In completing this assignment, please draw on the material we discussed in the class Powerpoints, the course textbook and other readings, problem sets. <\/span> You may also draw on other material you would like from the internet or elsewhere. <\/span> As you see fit, you are encouraged to research the background on these issues yourselves to supplement what we learned in class. <\/span> You are an economic advisor to President Biden, not a political advisor. <\/span> Thus, your memo should focus on the economic arguments for your proposal, drawing on what we have learned in class as well as any other sources you would like. <\/span> If you choose to include political considerations, that is fine, but you will be judged on the quality of your economic arguments. <\/span> There are many good ways to answer this assignment. <\/span> Your goal is to think of what information would actually be helpful to President Biden in the situation described.<\/span><\/p>\n
