Research Paper:<\/span><\/span>
Each student will write a research paper in the area of courts and sentencing.<\/span> <\/span>Research questions<\/span>
will be provided for students to choose.<\/span> <\/span>The paper<\/span> <\/span>should<\/span> <\/span>begin with<\/span> <\/span>an introduction of<\/span> <\/span>the issue<\/span>
and discuss<\/span> <\/span>the importance of<\/span> <\/span>th<\/span>e<\/span> <\/span>ques<\/span>tion.<\/span> <\/span>Next,<\/span> <\/span>there must be<\/span> <\/span>a thorough literature review from<\/span>
journal articles<\/span> <\/span>and\/or<\/span> <\/span>scholarly<\/span> <\/span>books t<\/span>hat<\/span> <\/span>include empirical findings to<\/span> <\/span>address the research<\/span>
question<\/span>.<\/span> <\/span>Discuss the theoretical framework and s<\/span>umma<\/span>rize prior research findings.<\/span> <\/span>Based on<\/span>
journal articles<\/span>\/books<\/span> <\/span>utilized, t<\/span>he last section of the paper should focus on the evaluation of<\/span>
prior resear<\/span>ch<\/span> <\/span>(including methodology)<\/span>, contemporary sentencing policies, and\/or<\/span>
court<\/span>\/sentencing<\/span> <\/span>reforms<\/span>, whenever relevant<\/span>. Also offer some thoughts on what is to be done.<\/span><\/span><\/span>
This research paper<\/span> <\/span>should be 1<\/span>0<\/span>–<\/span>1<\/span>3<\/span> <\/span>double<\/span>–<\/span>spaced pages and include references. The text of the<\/span>
paper must be<\/span> <\/span>more<\/span> <\/span>than 1<\/span>0<\/span> <\/span>pages. The reference list must include a minimum of 15<\/span> <\/span>sources<\/span> <\/span>(no<\/span>
more than f<\/span>our<\/span> <\/span>of which come from assigned readings on th<\/span>e<\/span> <\/span>syllabus<\/span> <\/span>and at least<\/span> <\/span>ten<\/span> <\/span>of which<\/span>
are emp<\/span>irical studies with the main purpose of research directly linked to your topic<\/span>).<\/span> <\/span>Make use<\/span>
of all sources identified, and they should be equally<\/span> <\/span>utilized<\/span> <\/span>in the research paper.<\/span> <\/span>The research<\/span>
paper will be due on<\/span> <\/span>T<\/span>ues<\/span>day,<\/span> <\/span>May<\/span> <\/span>2<\/span>,<\/span> <\/span>20<\/span>2<\/span>3<\/span> <\/span>and<\/span> <\/span>is worth 100 points t<\/span>oward the final grade. A<\/span>
late<\/span> <\/span>research paper<\/span> <\/span>will incur a reduction of 3 points for each day it is late, including the due<\/span>
date.<\/span> <\/span>The completed research paper must be submitted to<\/span> <\/span>Brightspace<\/span>\u2019s Assignment<\/span>s<\/span>.<\/span> <\/span>The<\/span>
research<\/span> <\/span>paper turned in after the end of<\/span> <\/span>May<\/span> <\/span>1<\/span>8<\/span>, 202<\/span>3<\/span> <\/span>will not be graded<\/span>, and<\/span> <\/span>the student will<\/span>
receive a<\/span> <\/span>grade of zero.<\/span> <\/span>In general, students can expect the submission to be graded within 5<\/span>–<\/span>7<\/span>
