Setting up a brand-new water heating system in a home or commercial structure is what plumbers call an “installation\u201d (Lusted,2015). The old water heater must be unplugged, the new one plugged in, new pipes installed, and ventilation checked and maintained as part of this process. One obvious point of Failure in this procedure is the possibility of musculoskeletal injuries or strains from heavy lifting, which can cause missed productivity, higher workers’ compensation costs, and even legal trouble for the business.<\/p>\n


This failure category is moderately severe because it could impact employees and the business. Inadequate training, incorrect lifting practices, or a lack of appropriate equipment to help with heavy lifting could contribute to a disastrous outcome. Since heavy lifting is typically included in the installation procedure, this failure mode has a high occurrence rating.<\/p>\n


Proper lifting procedures and the availability of personal protective equipment (PPE) like leather gloves are two of the current design controls in place to reduce this danger. However, the detection rating might not be sufficient because musculoskeletal injuries are only sometimes apparent. Considering the severity, frequency, and ease of detection, the risk priority number (RPN) for this failure scenario is 40. Action is needed to mitigate the dangers of heavy lifting during the installation procedure, as indicated by this RPN.<\/p>\n

Investing in equipment like a lift or hoist to aid the lifting operation could reduce the risk of the heavy lifting when installing a new water heater. By lowering the need for workers to exert themselves physically and the chance of them suffering musculoskeletal injuries or strains, this technology would help make the installation process safer for everyone involved. Workers installing the equipment should also receive instructions on safely lifting heavy objects and operating the machinery. Monitoring musculoskeletal injuries or strains, lost productivity, workers’ compensation costs and potential liability for the employer might all be used to gauge the efficacy of this suggestion.<\/p>\n
