Introduction:<\/span><\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

This assignment is the culmination of your semester-long research
\nproject. It is the opportunity for you to present your own thoughts and
\nopinions about the research you have conducted and presented all semester. In
\naddition to summarizing, evaluating, categorizing, and synthesizing information
\n(which you have already done in previous assignments) this assignment asks you
\nto build on the writing associated with your research to develop and defend a thesis based on the
\nscholarship you have identified.<\/i><\/b> In doing so, you will have an
\nopportunity to fuse your own conclusions and opinions with the established
\nresearch to persuade a reader of the validity of your established thesis.<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/span><\/p>\n

Purpose:<\/span><\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

Research papers will be assigned in most or all of your future coursework
\nthroughout your academic career. The purpose of the research paper is twofold:
\nto gather, evaluate and synthesize existing scholarship (as was done in the annotated
\nbibliography and literature review) and
\n<\/i><\/b>to use the research gathered to develop and defend a thesis. <\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/span><\/p>\n

Students will be expected to build on the foundation of the literature
\nreview in order to complete this assignment. While additional research will be requested,
\nthe research paper serves largely to expand the work done in the literature
\nreview to incorporate and demonstrate the student\u2019s own thinking about their
\ntopic. In doing so, students will learn to clearly articulate a thesis, defend
\nthat thesis using a variety of reputable sources as well as their own
\nunderstanding of the topic, and draw conclusions that clarify the student\u2019s
\nposition regarding the topic\/thesis at hand. For this reason, it is appropriate
\nto use writing from previous assignments to help develop this paper.<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/span><\/p>\n

Genre:<\/span><\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

Research papers require writers to explore the existing scholarship that
\nhas been completed relative to their research question\/topic and <\/i><\/b>utilize that scholarship in
\ndesigning and defending a thesis throughout the paper. <\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/span><\/p>\n

Thesis-based research papers span several pages to develop an argument
\nand defend the thesis. In the case of this paper, students are expected to
\nwrite no fewer than <\/span>15
\npages<\/span><\/b>; however, it is worth
\nnoting that the same structure\/format can and should be used for papers of both
\nshorter and far greater lengths. Research papers should include an introduction<\/b>
\n(1-3 paragraphs, provides topic of the review and organizational pattern of the
\nbody), a body<\/b> (multiple pages, provides your discussion of sources and
\nhow they prove\/demonstrate the thesis, and is organized thematically), and a
\ntwo-pronged conclusion<\/b> (1-2 paragraphs that incorporate reactions to the
\nsource materials and insights about the research topic, and 1-2 paragraphs to
\nsynthesize critical thinking threads and affirm that the thesis has been proven.)<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/span><\/p>\n

While this paper is dependent on research, students should be cautious
\nthat the bulk of the writing is their own ideas, which are born out of the
\nresearch conducted. For this reason, students should ensure that no more than 50%
\nof their paper is drawn from sourced materials.<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/span><\/p>\n

Writing in the first-person style (use of \u201cI\u201d) is NOT<\/u> <\/i><\/b>appropriate for this essay. You will defend your
\nthesis using a third-person style.<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/span><\/p>\n

\u00b7  <\/span><\/span><\/span>Synthesize multiple pieces of information collected
\nfrom a variety of sources by:<\/span><\/p>\n

o   <\/span><\/span><\/span>quoting and\/or summarizing main points from a target
\nof <\/span>three discrete
\nsources<\/span><\/i><\/b> per each theme (both
\nstyles of citation should be present in this paper),<\/span><\/p>\n

o   <\/span><\/span><\/span>incorporating the writer\u2019s conclusions, ideas, and
\nthoughts about each theme,<\/span><\/p>\n

o   <\/span><\/span><\/span>interrogating information across themes to draw
\nlarger conclusions about the topic\/research question and to defend the thesis.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00b7  <\/span><\/span><\/span>Organize your paper by using appropriate transitions
\nand making connections between ideas. This also means eliminating subheadings
\nand drafting clear topic sentences for each paragraph and providing
\ntransitional writing between themes,<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00b7  <\/span><\/span><\/span>Incorporate the student\u2019s insights about the
\nresearch topic in an effort to further develop or defend the thesis,<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00b7  <\/span><\/span><\/span>Synthesize critical thinking threads to ensure that
\nthe thesis has been proven;<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00b7  <\/span><\/span><\/span>Consider the order in which you sequence themes\/topics,
\nsubtopics, and sources within each paragraph,<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00b7  <\/span><\/span><\/span>Include a detailed, multi-faceted conclusion that
\naddresses both of the following:<\/span><\/p>\n

o   <\/span><\/span><\/span>Insights about the research topic and<\/span><\/p>\n

o   <\/span><\/span><\/span>Synthesis of critical thinking threads to affirm
\nthat the thesis has been proven.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00b7  <\/span><\/span><\/span>Address the need for additional research, if
\nappropriate, throughout the drafting process,<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00b7  <\/span><\/span><\/span>Articulate (model) the conventions, style, writing,
\nand communication found in the articles you have read,<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00b7  <\/span><\/span><\/span>MLA Format (double-spaced, 12-point font, 1\u201d
\nmargins, standard serif font,<\/span><\/p>\n
