For this paper, you will critically analyze the book \u201cThere are no children here: The story of two boys growing up in the other America\u201d <\/span><\/strong>(Kotlowitz 1992). Your paper should address three areas as shown below in bold\/underlined texts. Include these subheadings in your paper.<\/span><\/p>\n

Delinquency<\/u><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Briefly summarize Kotlowitz\u2019s book (K\u2019s book). Do not recount the story.<\/span><\/p>\n

Discuss what contribute to delinquency in this community. Specifically, discuss 3-4 most important\/pertinent risk factors and address how each factor poses as a risk for children growing up in this community.<\/span><\/p>\n

Address how delinquent patterns described in K’s book compare with what you have learned in this course. Compare patterns in terms of gender, age, race, class, and in terms of both victim and offender patterns.  How are they similar and different compared to what you have learned. <\/span><\/p>\n

Causes of Delinquency<\/u><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Select 2 theories (one from each category below<\/strong>):<\/span><\/p>\n

    Category 1: Anomie; Cultural Deviance; Disorganization; Routine Activity; Critical<\/span><\/p>\n

    Category 2: General Strain; Social Learning; Social Bonds\/Self-Control; Rational Choice; Labeling<\/span><\/p>\n

Describe your chosen theories in detail (cite an academic book or journal article for each theory other than your textbook\/lecture notes).<\/span><\/p>\n

Address how each theory explains & fails to explain the delinquency in K’s book (use the details of K\u2019s book in support of your claims).<\/span><\/p>\n

Address how the two theories complement (i.e., how they are similar and different; what one does, whereas the other fails to do and vice versa). <\/span><\/p>\n

Delinquency Control<\/u><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Describe 2 programs (check notes & Chapters 3-4\/11-14 of your textbook). (HINT: Programs must be tied to your chosen theories).<\/span><\/p>\n

Discuss each program\u2019s benefits and limitations (include academic reference for each program other than textbook\/lecture notes).<\/span><\/p>\n

Address whether there are hopes to reduce crime\/delinquency in this community, which type of program may be more (or less) effective, and why.<\/span><\/p>\n

Integrate your discussion into a coherent essay. Essays must be between 6 – 10 pages, not counting cover page and reference page. <\/span>Please include a cover page with paper title, your name, course name and semester, and a separate page for listing references. <\/span><\/span>Use double space and 1″ margin (12 font size). Abstract is NOT required. Please check grammar and typos carefully.<\/span><\/p>\n

Essays are evaluated based on your understanding of the theories\/concepts, and your ability to connect the conceptual tool with the story. Clarity of ideas, insights, presentation style, as well as organization and formatting ALL contribute to the evaluation.<\/span><\/p>\n
