Synthesis Essay Assignment<\/p>\n

Background<\/div>\n
The CLEP exam requires you to develop two coherent essays. One is a synthesis in which you must take a stance on an issue and support your stance with evidence from two specific sources.<\/div>\n
In this assignment, you’ll practice examining an issue, developing a strong position on the issue, and supporting your thoughts with outside sources.<\/div>\n
Assignment<\/div>\n
Carefully read the essays “Against Offensive Warfare” and “What is a Just War.” Using both sources, write an essay where you agree or disagree that war can be used as an instrument of justice. Make sure you use and cite both essays properly.<\/div>\n
Your essay should include the following components:<\/div>\n
\u2022 An introduction. In this introduction, you must present the issue and your stance on the issue (i.e. whether you agree with the statement and why). Please be sure your thesis is clear and direct.<\/div>\n
\u2022 Three body paragraphs. Each paragraph should discuss a different reason for your position.<\/div>\n
\u2022 A counterargument\/rebuttal paragraph. You must address and refute an alternative opinion (you can do this in one paragraph or two).<\/div>\n
\u2022 A conclusion. You must sum up the contents of your paper while using new and interesting language.<\/div>\n
Submission Requirements<\/div>\n
The paper needs to be 6-7 paragraphs long, written in 12-pt. Times New Roman. Remember to double space your work!<\/div>\n
