Sociologists have primarily analyzed art as a cultural practice that can

offer insights about larger society. In this view art becomes a reflection of the material and/or

symbolic conditions of our world, an artifact that gives clues to the functioning of a social structure.

Art affords us a way to share our experiences

Art gives us a way to relate to others

Art simultaneously reflects and shapes society

Art transcends language to communicate ideas

What is the role of the artist? Artists provide creative, intellectual and emotional insights

into society at large, impacting society and challenging the status quo.

Artists create possibilities.

What do artists do? Creative thinkers and makers provide their communities with stimulation,

interaction, and inspiration, but they also give thoughtful critique to our political, economic,

and social systems — pushing communities to engage thoughtfully and make steps

Do artists work alone? Historically there is a myth that people are born with artistic talent.

But, in actuality art needs other people to be produced. Creativity isn’t a solely solo pursuit,

it’s cumulative and collaborative

Do artists have a responsibility? Artists are cultural producers who shape mass opinion.

Artists use materials and create conditions that alter our environment and senses. Their

influence is profound.

What is Self-Care?

The practice of taking

action to preserve or

improve one’s own

health!

The Importance of Self-Care

● Maintains a healthy relationship

with yourself and with others

● Reduces stress, anxiety, and

overthinking

● Increased happiness and

productivity in all aspects of life

● Better academic performance

● Creates a well-balanced life

Benefits of Self-Care Practices

● Advocates for a positive mental attitude

● Helps avoid burnout and feeling

mentally/physically exhausted

● Breaks help replenish your brain and increases

brain function

● Helps you feel refreshed and ready to start your

day again

● It’s important to stop, and give yourself time to

relax, de-stress, and enjoy yourself

● And finally, because you deserve it!

Student Mentoring Program

● We support students with their transition from high

school or community college to CSUSB

● We pair you with an experienced CSUSB Student Mentor

to guide you

● We connect you to campus resources

○ Advisors

○ Clubs/Programs/Organizations

● We also help you improve skills

○ Time Management

○ Goal-Setting

○ Self-Care Practices

developing an art practice

Establish a Routine

• Use this time to practice skills

• Allot time to think without other distractions

• Discipline is a repetitive act of honing one’s craft

Choose your genre, niche

• Look at art on a regular basis to see the multitudes of genres and forms that art can take

• Become proficient in one area which will allow you to focus

and build a reputation around your specific work

Find Your Voice/Explore Your Style

• Look to other practitioners that you may be “in conversation” with

• Give yourself time to experiment and mine your life experiences for content to make art from

Create a Portfolio

• A portfolio is a thoughtfully curated sampling of your art that affords others a chance to see

your work

• Have an artist statement and a few pieces of writing to accompany your work as you apply for

Developing As Professionals unit

Establish Experience

• Internships

• Residencies

• Volunteer Opportunities

• Assisting

• Entry Level

Attend a Workshop/Continue Education

• Discipline Specific Symposiums, Conferences, Talks

• Skill-Building Workshops

Develop a Network

• Linked In, Academia, Lists, Local/National Directories, Societies

Preparing a CV or Resume

What to include:

• All discipline-related work experience

• All discipline-related academic activities

• All discipline-related community work

• Educational Background

• Special Skillsets

• Memberships, professional seminars or certifications

Create an E-Portfolio, Reel or Pitchdeck

• Canva, Padlet, Google, Format, Pitch

• Visual resume with live links, career highlights and thumbnails of your work

Visual Artists: 10 images ready to go with a statement

Commercial Artists: 10 images ready to go with a branded log

Use all these information provided and answer the question

Create a powerpoint sharing what you’ve learned in the class and how you’ll apply it to your own practice as an artist.
