Certainly the primary drive that propels Richard Rodriguez\u2019s \u201cThe\n<\/div>\n
Achievement of Desire\u201d centers on the idea of the Scholarship Boy, a phrase\n<\/div>\n
borrowed from Richard Hoggart\u2019s The Uses of Literacy. However, Rodriguez\n<\/div>\n
expands Hoggart\u2019s definition of the (white, \u201cworking-class\u201d) Scholarship Boy to\n<\/div>\n
include the complications that arise for a Scholarship Boy from a different race\n<\/div>\n
and ethnicity, one who is also trying to assimilate, but not simply into a higher\n<\/div>\n
class but a dominant culture entirely foreign to the one he (or she) enjoys at\n<\/div>\n
home.\n<\/div>\n
This idea of alienation from the mainstream, dominant culture is also\n<\/div>\n
represented in various ways in John Guare\u2019s Six Degrees of Separation. The\n<\/div>\n
central character, Paul \u201cPoitier-Kittredge,\u201d becomes fixated on assimilating into\n<\/div>\n
the dominant culture (represented by Flan & Ouisa Kittredge) that has so far\n<\/div>\n
excluded him, and we see throughout the film examples of a character (Paul)\n<\/div>\n
who cultivates the Scholarship Boy\u2019s ability to become \u201cthe great mimic; a\n<\/div>\n
collector of thoughts, not a thinker,\u201d to use Rodriguez\u2019s parlance from his chapter.\n<\/div>\n
