The relationship between poverty and criminal justice is complex, with one often leading to the other. Poverty often leads to increased exposure to negative encounters with the police, and incarceration further perpetuates the cycle of poverty. Furthermore, the psychological effects of negative encounters with the criminal justice system are significant, with many Black individuals experiencing long-term effects such as depression, anxiety, and low self-esteem. These experiences also contribute to intergenerational trauma, as the trauma experienced by one generation can be passed down to the next. Despite the growing awareness of these issues, the federal government’s response has been inadequate, with many arguing that more needs to be done to address systemic racism and poverty. This paper seeks to examine the impact of the criminal justice system and poverty in Black communities, assess the psychological effects of these experiences, explore the federal government’s role in addressing these issues, and consider the role of intergenerational trauma. By doing so, this paper aims to contribute to the ongoing discussions on how to create a more equitable and just society for all. The criminal justice system and poverty have negatively impacted Black communities in the United States, and the federal government must take significant steps to address these issues and create a fair and just society for all, while also acknowledging the role of intergenerational trauma in perpetuating these issues.<\/p>\n
The criminal justice system and poverty are two intertwined issues that have disproportionately affected Black communities in the United States.
