You will prepare a six-part (1500-words minimum) biographical essay on a fictional character<\/p>\n<div>who turned 18 years old in 1760 and lived until 1805or who turned 18 years old in 1820 and\n<\/div>\n<div>lived until 1865.\n<\/div>\n<div>2. You may choose your character\u2019s place of birth within the United States (or perhaps as a young\n<\/div>\n<div>immigrant to the United States), gender, ethnicity, race, religion, class, occupation, and overall\n<\/div>\n<div>personality traits.\n<\/div>\n<div>3. Your character may not die prematurely.\n<\/div>\n<div>4. Your character cannot alter the course of history in any fundamental way.\n<\/div>\n<div>5. Your assignment will consist of the following parts:\n<\/div>\n<div>a. Part I (200 words minimum): Utilizing your course readings and materials, introduce\n<\/div>\n<div>your character in two or three paragraphs. Provide historically- accurate and meaningful\n<\/div>\n<div>details regarding your character\u2019s name, date and place of birth, current place of\n<\/div>\n<div>residence, race, ethnicity, sex, gender, class, and other relevant personal detail and\n<\/div>\n<div>information. Each of these personal characteristics must be identified and explained. In\n<\/div>\n<div>addition, create an avatar (or some other artistic representation) of your character and\n<\/div>\n<div>explain why you chose the characteristics depicted. (COM)\n<\/div>\n<div>b. Part II (500 words minimum): Analyze one of the major historic conflicts taking place\n<\/div>\n<div>in the time-period your character is living through (such as the Independence movement,\n<\/div>\n<div>War of 1812, Civil War, etc.) and is having a direct impact on the life of your character.\n<\/div>\n<div>Explain the historic antecedents or causes of such events. Be sure to identify the major\n<\/div>\n<div>historical figures and organizations that are associated with this event and the specific\n<\/div>\n<div>role(s) each played. Be sure to identify precise historical, social, political, economic,\n<\/div>\n<div>cultural, and global forces that shaped the event or conflict you are describing. Last,\n<\/div>\n<div>explain how this historical event or conflict affected or, perhaps, divided, Americans\n<\/div>\n<div>living in this era. (SLO1; SLO3; CT; COM)\n<\/div>\n<div>c. Part III (200 words minimum): Find and analyze one primary source document directly\n<\/div>\n<div>related to the historical event or conflict you described in Part II. Explain the historical\n<\/div>\n<div>issue or issues raised in the primary source document. In other words, what does the\n<\/div>\n<div>document tell us and what insights does it shed on the historical event you discussed in\n<\/div>\n<div>Part II?\n<\/div>\n<div>\uf0b7In your review of this primary source, explain the view or perspective of the\n<\/div>\n<div>author of the document and the overall purpose of the document?\n<\/div>\n<div>\uf0b7 Provide at least three examples or quotes from your document that help\n<\/div>\n<div>you understand the perspective of the person(s) who produced it.\n<\/div>\n<div>\uf0b7Last, consider how the issues raised in the primary-source document you analyzed\n<\/div>\n<div>would have reinforced or challenged your character\u2019s worldview, ethical values,\n<\/div>\n<div>and\/or historical perspective. Would your character agree or disagree with the\n<\/div>\n<div>view or perspective expressed by this document? Be sure you properly cite the\n<\/div>\n<div>source you use. (SLO1; SLO2;SLO3;CT; COM)\n<\/div>\n<div>d. Part IV (200 words minimum): Identify one major historically relevant ethical dilemma\n<\/div>\n<div>or moral choice that your character is struggling with in regards to this historical conflict.\n<\/div>\n<div>What personal or unique impact is this historical event having on your character? Be sure\n<\/div>\n<div>to explain how this ethical issue relates to this historical event and how the event is\n<\/div>\n<div>directly affecting your character (i.e., impacting his or her everyday experiencesand\/or\n<\/div>\n<div>challenging your character\u2019s world and ethical view(s)). (SLO1; SLO3; CT; COM)\n<\/div>\n<div>e. Part V (200 words minimum): Explain how your character has decided to respond to\n<\/div>\n<div>the ethical dilemma at hand and why he or she responded in the way you identified.\n<\/div>\n<div>Explain how your character\u2019s cultural background and historical setting (i.e. the\n<\/div>\n<div>historical, social, political, economic, cultural and global forces), and the broader\n<\/div>\n<div>conceptions of ethical behavior embedded within, shaped your character\u2019s response.\n<\/div>\n<div>Consider at least one of the following: (1) your character\u2019s conception(s) of civic\n<\/div>\n<div>responsibility; (2) your character\u2019s understanding of the importance and role of the\n<\/div>\n<div>democratic process; (3) your character\u2019s respect for social justice, fairness, and\n<\/div>\n<div>difference; (4) your character\u2019s experiences with prejudice, racial or gender\n<\/div>\n<div>discrimination, and\/or economic and social marginalization.
