Linguistics\u2014Inquiry Project Directions<\/p>\n

Introduction\n<\/div>\n
For your final project in Linguistics, you are to explore a genuine language-related question you\n<\/div>\n
raise out of curiosity, a question whose answer you do not know or know fully. On the final due\n<\/div>\n
date, you will submit a report of your findings: what you discovered in the process of your inquiry.\n<\/div>\n
Your inquiry topic should be one that is related to language study\u2014think \u201ccircle diagram,\u201d unit\n<\/div>\n
topics, AIL Chapters, your future profession and language issues, etc. You need to be able to\n<\/div>\n
locate where your topic fits in the layer of circles on the diagram and\/or the topics of our 5 Units.\n<\/div>\n
Linguistics uses APA manuscript\/documentation for research papers and reports final drafts.\n<\/div>\n
Topic: Student choice\n<\/div>\n
\uf0b7 Should be related to an aspect of our course units, in some respect; it should be a topic related in\n<\/div>\n
some way to our AIL text and\/or readings, and it must have instructor approval.\n<\/div>\n
\uf0b7 Should raise a genuine question for inquiry, one whose answer you do not know or you would\n<\/div>\n
like to confirm through research.\n<\/div>\n
\uf0b7 Focus the exploration as needed to formulate 3 central inquiry questions to search\u2014e.g., not\n<\/div>\n
the entire realm of or not every historical aspect of Middle English development\n<\/div>\n
\uf0b7 Consider a topic related to your professional program (optional but might be good for\n<\/div>\n
education, psychology, Technical\/Professional Communication, editor\/publishing, etc.)\n<\/div>\n
Audience –instructor and our class members\n<\/div>\n
Methods of Inquiry\n<\/div>\n
(exploring and gathering answers to your 2-3 central inquiry questions)\n<\/div>\n
1. Secondary reading research\u2014critical, published scholarly sources relevant to your inquiry topic; only authoritative and\/or purposeful Internet sites.<\/span><\/div>\n
2. Primary research\/exploration \u2013 original research (Typically an interview; for other desigms\n<\/div>\n
design, please consult with the instructor -EX: survey, field observation, etc.).\n<\/div>\n
NOTE all designs must be approved design.\n<\/div>\n
Format: Research Documented Report (APA)\n<\/div>\n
Manuscript and Layout: academic research report format with subheadings APA–refer to\n<\/div>\n
content\/headings below; models of format options will be provided on Canvas\n<\/div>\n

\uf0b7 Part 2\u2014Reading Research Findings (Answers to your key inquiry questions\u2014as found in your\n<\/div>\n
reading\/research; secondary resources; this part will sound like a traditional research paper 4-5 pages)\n<\/div>\n
\uf0b7 Part 3\u2014Primary Research Findings (interviews, surveys, text analysis, field\n<\/div>\n
observations, etc. \u20131.5- 2 pages)\n<\/div>\n
\uf0b7 Part 4\u2014Analysis and Conclusions (see Canvas \u201cInquiry Project\u201d link for sample questions 1.5 pages)\n<\/div>\n
\uf0b7 Part 5\u2014Projections (what would you do next if you were to continue this project? 1 page)\n<\/div>\n
\uf0b7 Appendix\u2014length\/type will vary (visuals, survey sample, diagrams, stats charts, graphs, etc.)\n<\/div>\n
\uf0b7 Sources pages\u2014APA=References. MINIMUM of 6 secondary sources (may include your textbook as one). NOTE\u2014you may use anecdotal or \u201cnon-academic\u201d websites, but these are considered \u201cextra\u201d <\/span>sources\u2014not part of the required six. (If you think a website is justified as a scholarly or authoritative <\/span>source, be sure to evaluate it and justify it as such; ask me if you are uncertain).<\/span><\/div>\n
NOTE: PARTS 2, and 3, will be the more \u201cformidable\u201d and substantial parts of the written inquiry report. Student models will be provided<\/span><\/div>\n

Length: Standard Research Paper: aim for 10-12 pages (about 2500 words; 5000 max.) Includes source <\/span>pages and may include appendixes, visuals, charts, glossary, etc.<\/span><\/div>\n
Due Date: FINAL Deadline to submit: See \u201cAt a Glance Weekly Schedule\u201d for the due date<\/span><\/div>\n
Evaluation:\n<\/div>\n
120 points (75 content; 10 edited final draft; 20 for APA Documentation; 15\n<\/div>\n
format\/manuscript). Any incidence of plagiarism will result in a failing grade and possibly\n<\/div>\n
course failure.\n<\/div>\n
Grading Criteria: generally, the above guidelines\/directions. Must contain linguistic\n<\/div>\n
aspects and connections in the paper (for example, morphology, semantics,\n<\/div>\n
language acquisition, etc.). Provides evidence of significant research, writing,\n<\/div>\n
support, and primary research design\/effort. Supporting materials provided\n<\/div>\n
(appendices, bibliography, etc.)\n<\/div>\n
For a more specific breakdown of points, a rubric for evaluation will be provided. If you\n<\/div>\n
