Ideally, you will pick musical elements to write about in this part that will be further explored by the pieces you selected for Part III.<\/div>\n

Describe both pieces you chose to write about. Include full titles and composers\u2019 names, as well as the dates of the compositions. In your own way, using your knowledge and appropriate, correctly cited materials (OTHER THAN YOUR TEXTBOOK), provide historical background for each work you select and then describe why it is a good example (or not) of the qualities of that period. You will find information about a piece in the liner notes of a CD, in books in the library, academic journals, and\/or online sources.<\/div>\n
Describe each piece musically\u2014that is, using the musical elements studied in class, discuss what you hear as you listen to the piece. Consider how the elements are used in each piece. Use the terminology from the textbook\/your class notes to help you describe the music. Include the type of ensemble (orchestra, piano, choir, etc.) as well as the instrumentation and\/or voicing. Include two or more examples of musical elements as they are used in each piece. If you are describing a vocal work, be sure to comment on the text, its meaning, and how the composer has set the words to music.<\/div>\n

You should try to write approx. 150 words or more on each piece of music. That means about 50% of your essay is your own personal description of the two pieces of music that you have selected to compare.<\/div>\n
