Knowledge translation is an important skill in global health and “involves refining or

transforming evidence to make it comprehensible and meaningful for the recipient.” Students will

accomplish this by developing a health communication campaign plan which is a critical tool in health

communication frequently used to disseminate information through a variety of channels.

Guidelines:

Please format your campaign as follows:Assignment: Health Communication Campaign

Cover page (please use Appendix A of the Schiavo textbook as a reference for these items):

● Title

● Introduction paragraph to your topic/health issue and why it’s timely

● Intended audience (can be a bulleted list)

● Overall objectives (can be a bulleted list)

Content pages:

Please include the content for your campaign in a table format for social media, and in writing

form for each of the other options with clear headings.

Guidelines for each element:

TWITTER

● Twitter is an interesting space for public health, but one that cannot be ignored when thinking

about a full communications campaign.

● If you choose to use Twitter as part of your campaign, please write at least 5 posts (up to 10) to

promote your topic of choice. All posts must be within the Twitter character limit (280 characters)

and include at least one relevant hashtag. Search for relevant hashtags on Twitter by typing in

your proposed hashtag in Twitter and seeing if any larger public health organizations are also

using that hashtag – i.e. WHO, USAID, SDGs, etc.

● Additionally, please create at least two graphics to accompany your Twitter posts either using

Canva or PowerPoint. If you’d like to create a graphic and don’t know where to start or are

unfamiliar with Canva, please let me know. Guidelines for each element:

LINKEDIN:

● Linkedin is the new Facebook for professionals. Industry trends in communication suggest that

Linkedin is actually a great way to reach a more technical audience. Posts on Linkedin can be

tailored to an audience that might know a little bit about your topic as opposed to Twitter, where

we assume that the audience is not familiar with your topic.

● For these two posts, please highlight your topic in a slightly more technical lens using no more

than 100 words. If you need inspiration, check out the Linkedin pages for USAID, WHO, Peace

Corps, etc.

● Additionally, please create at least one graphic either using Canva or PowerPoint. If you’d like to

create a graphic and don’t know where to start or are unfamiliar with Canva, please let me know.

INSTAGRAM:

● According to industry trends, videos, engaging graphics, GIFs, and stories on Instagram are often

a great way to reach a wide audience. Yes, even in public health communication!

● If you choose to use Instagram for your campaign, please draft one IG post for your

organization’s hypothetical main feed, with an accompanying graphic AND a series of 3-5 IG

stories, which should be created in Canva with text on top of your graphics.

● Again, if you need inspiration please check out your favorite public health organizations’ feeds on

Instagram.

E-NEWSLETTER:

● E-newsletters are a great way to share information with large audiences. Think about what you

want your audience to know after they read your e-newsletter. Are you sharing a new report or

raising awareness for World Breastfeeding Week?

● If you choose to use an e-newsletter for your campaign, please write 2-3 paragraphs highlighting

your health topic and include 1-2 relevant links to either a research article or a new relevant report.

● Additionally, please create at least one graphic either using Canva or PowerPoint. If you’d like to

create a graphic and don’t know where to start or are unfamiliar with Canva, please let me know.

PRESS RELEASE:

● Press releases are a great way to shape the information that you want to be put out into the world.

Let’s say that your organization just announced a large funding commitment to combat

malnutrition. A press release is a great way to share new and newsy information that journalists or

other communicators can use in their own communications.

● If you choose to do a press release, please check out a few of these pages for inspiration:

○ USAID Press Releases

○ CDC Press Releases

○ WHO News Articles

● Press releases should be short and punchy but provide enough information to leave out any

guesswork. Your press release should be no shorter than 300 words and no longer than 500 words.

WEBINAR CONCEPT NOTE:

● Webinars are also a great way to communicate information with various audiences. I don’t expect

you to create a full webinar, but a concept note for a webinar is a short description of the topic,

purpose, audience, potential speakers, and agenda for your webinar – including the time and date.

● If you choose to create a concept note for a webinar, your description should be no longer than

one page of written text (1-2 paragraphs to introduce the topic and the purpose, and bulleted lists

for the audience, potential speakers, and agenda)

*Note: if you do a combination of a webinar or press release with social media posts, you can promote

your own press release or webinar in your social media posts. You could also promote your webinar in an

e-newsletter. The possibilities are endless!

Cite your source(s) using APA format. Ideas and information that are not your own should be cited

appropriately within the text and in the reference list at the end of the policy brief. Please use the APA

(American Psychological Association) citation style.
