Evaluate the work of Jim Fallon in light of the discussion by Nagel and Wolf. Nagel argues that we can be held accountable only for those actions that are within our control. Fallon’s research suggests that the brain-damaged men in his study cannot control their propensity for violence, given the extent of their brain damage and the abuse their suffered before age 12. Wolf argues that we can be held responsible for our actions only if our deep self is sane. (Suppose for the sake of the argument that men in Fallon’s study are criminally insane.) The analysis by Nagel and Wolf seems to suggest that the men in Fallon’s study should be institutionalized in a mental facility instead of being punished by life in prison or the death penalty. Evaluate the arguments advanced by Nagel and Wolf.
