-The purpose of this technology controversy assignment is to get you to start thinking critically about how science and technological issues are presented in the popular press as well as in academic literature.<\/div>\n

-In addition, writing this paper will also allow you to examine multiple perspectives of a current scientific or technological debate and see how your own ideas about current issues are influenced by the types of sources you examine. <\/div>\n

How is this paper different from a traditional essay?<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
-A traditional argumentative essay normally has a thesis statement and you provide arguments trying to prove your point of view is correct. While there is value in this kind of assignment, the problem is that if you spend all of your time focusing on one side of a debate, you are unlikely to examine arguments that go against your own ideas. <\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
-This technology controversy paper will allow you to explore a current scientific or technological controversy from different points of view. The reason it is called \u201ccontroversial\u201d is because your topic is one currently being debated by people who can\u2019t agree on anything.<\/div>\n

-Your responsibility will be to figure out and describe the various arguments on either side of the debate! <\/div>\n

-Highlight the general conflicts of opinion but do not provide detailed arguments about either side of your debate\u2026save this for the body of your paper!<\/div>\n

3. Research Results (2 sections \u2013 multiple paragraphs)<\/div>\n
-This part of your paper will contain two different sections and each section will contain multiple paragraphs<\/div>\n
-For example, if you are doing your debate about colonizing outer space, one section will state: Research Results \u2013 Colonizing Outer Space is a worthwhile pursuit <\/div>\n
-In this section, you will organize and highlight all the arguments for this side of the debate by combining the information you have gathered from your scholarly and popular sources<\/div>\n
-Once you are done, you will do the same thing for the next section that presents the opposing point of view: Research Results \u2013 Colonizing Outer Space is not a worthwhile pursuit<\/div>\n
-Since there is likely to be repetition in terms of positions outlined in your sources, organize your paragraphs according to the \u201cbig picture\u201d arguments (e.g. ethical, social, legal, political) you used earlier in the process (Slide 19)<\/div>\n
-Important Reminder: These big picture arguments don\u2019t have to be the same for either side \u2013 in fact, this may be one reason why people can\u2019t agree about these issues in the first place! <\/div>\n
-For example, in terms of colonizing space, you might have some people supporting the idea for financial reasons, while others are against this idea because of health considerations <\/div>\n
-Remember that you don\u2019t have to choose sources that only discuss one side of the debate as many sources (especially academic ones) are likely to present information on both sides \u2013 this means you can use the same source for both sections as required!   <\/div>\n
