At any age, the parent\n<\/div>\n<div>must be the manager, and the child must learn to cope with the demands of life. The behaviors that\n<\/div>\n<div>the Friels identify as unacceptable include:\n<\/div>\n<div>\uf0b7 Baby your child\u2014no pressure, no expectations; the alternatives are reasonable\n<\/div>\n<div>expectations that include schedules, behavior guidelines, and a little struggle.\n<\/div>\n<div>\uf0b7 Put your marriage last\u2014a Child Producing Unit with nothing left for the couple; the\n<\/div>\n<div>alternative is to design a family schedule for time as a couple and spouse\u2019s priorities.\n<\/div>\n<div>\uf0b7 Push your child into too many activities\u2014avoid personal time by scheduling structured\n<\/div>\n<div>group activities; alternatively, achieve a balance in family and community group\n<\/div>\n<div>activities.\n<\/div>\n<div>\uf0b7 Ignore your emotional or spiritual life\u2014inability to connect with something beyond\n<\/div>\n<div>ourselves; the alternative is to develop humility and trust, take time for living, love.\n<\/div>\n<div>\uf0b7 Be your child\u2019s best friend\u2014no guts for management; alternatively, be the parent and\n<\/div>\n<div>accept that your child will get angry with you and get your own life.\n<\/div>\n<div>\uf0b7 Fail to give your child structure\u2014no guidelines, no rules; the alternative is to provide\n<\/div>\n<div>external structure and actively help the child learn self-control strategies.\n<\/div>\n<div>\uf0b7 Expect your child to fulfill your dreams\u2014push for your career choice; note that twin\n<\/div>\n<div>studies show importance of genetic predisposition, and a 1998 Harris Poll showed 62\n<\/div>\n<div>percent of college students would not consider the same career as their parent.\n<\/div>\n<div>References\n<\/div>\n<div>Friel, J.
