When you write an extended literary essay, often one requiring research, you are essentially making an argument. You are arguing that your perspective\u2013an interpretation, an evaluative judgment, or a critical evaluation\u2013is a valid one. You have to develop some debatable point to discuss, something with which not everyone would agree.<\/p>\n

Just as you did for your short story analysis, you will focus on theme, characterization, or literary devices for your selected literary piece (film, novel, short story, or play). Remember that you cannot select a literary piece that we have discussed in class this semester. In this assignment, you are also required to use outside sources in your analysis.<\/div>\n

* You must have a minimum of five academic sources. By \u201cacademic,\u201d I mean that they must come from critical reviews from academic sources These do not include encyclopedias, reference books, CliffNotes, SparkNotes<\/div>\n
    * For films, you may use RottonTomatoes.com or IMDB.com databases. However, make sure that you only select critical reviews and not user reviews..<\/div>\n
* You need to include a minimum of ten citations (quotes or paraphrases) following MLA standards of documentation. (This is one of the main purposes of the assignment.)<\/div>\n
* Your essay will need to be a minimum of 1,300 words, and as always, in MS Word format. You must submit it as an MSWord attachment no later than midnight<\/div>\n
