For your final assignment, you will need to synthesize all of your knowledge into creating a family engagement plan for your classroom. Imagine you have a reasonable budget (not unlimited) and willing school administrators. How will you engage families? How will you be inclusive of children with exceptionalities? This project is meant to synthesize all of your learning in this class and put it to use in a practical way. There are two parts to this assignment. Please complete and submit both parts of this assignment in Canvas and also to your Folio.
Part 1: Artifact Creation
For this assignment, you will create the actual item(s) that you would send out to families as a means to engage them. For example, you could design a newsletter, Smore, utilize a technology program, or determine some other means of engagement. Be creative with thinking of an idea. This must be your original creation, and not something that is taken from someone else.
Your item(s) should demonstrate the following:
- Shows an understanding of children with exceptionalities.
- Utilizes state and federal recommendations for family engagement.
- Promotes inclusive practices and settings while presuming competence in all learners.
- It provides information in an attractive way likely to engage families.
Part 2: Written Explanation
In a paragraph (5-7 sentences), explain how your artifact:
- Meets the needs of exceptional learners.
- Engages families, and specifically mentions which state and/or federal recommendations relate to the idea. Please use in-text citations in APA formatting in the paragraph to credit your sources for the recommendations, and include the sources at the end of the paragraph in a References section with the sources in APA formatting.
- Promotes inclusivity.
As discussed in the previous lesson, it is essential to work toward family engagement for all families, particularly those with children with exceptionalities. IDEA clearly outlines the importance of family participation. For this lesson, you will spend some time reviewing family engagement ideas and resources outlined below. You will also research your own state’s resources for more ideas. (I live in Massachsuetts)
